Sono state finalmente annunciate le nomination per l'ottantaquattresima notte degli Oscar, prevista per il prossimo 26 febbraio 2012. 

Non sono affatto poche le soddisfazioni per il fantastico cinematografico, a partire dalle undici nomination per Hugo di Martin Scorsese, il regista di Taxi Driver, Re per una notte, Toro Scatenato, A Good Fellas e tante altri apprezzati film. Tra queste segnaliamo quelle della coppia di scenografi italiani Dante Ferretti e Francesca Lo Schiavo.

Il film è un fantastico omaggio alla settima arte, che Scorsese ha tratto dal romanzo La straordinaria invenzione di Hugo Cabret, di Brian Selznick. 

Del film è protagonista il piccolo Asa Butterfield, nel ruolo di Hugo,che presenta nel cast Ben Kingsley, Chloe Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law,  Emily Mortimer e Christopher Lee. 

La sceneggiatura (nominata all'oscar) è stata scritta da John Logan (Il gladiatore, The Time Machine, The Aviator, Sweeney Todd, Rango, Coriolano, Bond 23).

La Paramount distribuisce il film di cui Scorsese è anche produttore, insieme a Johnny Depp.

Come il romanzo il film è ambientato a Parigi intorno al 1930, e racconta la storia di un orfano (Asa Butterfield) che vive all'interno di una stazione ferroviaria che si trova a risolvere, insieme alla sua amica Isabelle (Chloe Moretz) un mistero che riguarda il suo defunto padre e un automa e il misterioso Papa Georges, che si rivelerà essere Georges Méliès, uno dei padri fondatori dell'arte cinematografica.

Che sia la volta buona che un film fantastico si aggiudica il premio come miglior film, che non arriva al genere da noi amato dai tempi di Il ritorno del Re di Peter Jackson (2004), che si aggiudicò undici premi su undici nomination?

Elementi fantastici sono presenti anche nel film di Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris, candidato nelle categorie film, regia, sceneggiatura e direzione artistica.

I film di Allen e Scorsese hanno un agguerrito rivale, The Artist, il film muto e in bianco e nero molto apprezzato da pubblico e critica, con dieci candidature, che omaggia anch'esso le origini della storia del cinema.

Tra le altre categorie "importanti" ci limitiamo a segnalare la nomination di Gary Oldman - Sirius Black in Harry Potter e il Prigioniero di Azkaban e in Harry Potter e l'Ordine della Fenice, commissario Gordon in Batman Begins e The Dark Knight di Christopher Nolan e vampiro in Dracula di Bram Stoker - come miglior attore protagonista per La talpa e Kenneth Branagh - Gilderoy Allock in Harry Potter e la Camera dei Segreti - come miglior attore non protagonista in My Week with Marilyn. 

Va bene anche per quanto riguarda la sezione miglior film d'animazione, in cui vengono nominati, Kung Fu Panda 2, Il Gatto con gli Stivali, Rango, tutti recensiti qui su Fantasy Magazine. Per quel che riguarda l'aspetto sonoro, segnaliamo la nomination per John Williams, che di certo non ha bisogno di presentazioni, per Le Avventure di Tintin, mentre Transformers 3 - Dark of the Moon si è aggiudicato due nomination per il sound editing e per il sound mixing. Transformers è presente anche nella categoria migliori effetti visivi, insieme a Real Steel, Harry Potter e i Doni della Morte - Parte II e L'alba del pianeta delle scimmie. I Doni della Morte fanno capolino anche nella sezione miglior make up. 

Un altro italiano, l'animatore della Pixar Enrico Casarosa, è in corsa per il premio per il miglior cortometraggio di animazione, La Luna, ispirato alla sua infanzia sulle coste liguri.
